Google Isn't Infallible

Saw a story on Alootechie "Google, Chicago Tribune blame each other for collapse of United Airlines stock price"

17 September, 2008
Google and Chicago Tribune have blamed each other for the recent collapse of United Airlines stock price when an old story originally published by Chicago Tribune on 10th December 2002 about United Airlines’ plan to seek bankruptcy protection was picked up by the search engine as a fresh story.

According to Google, the problem began with the Sun Sentinel site, which had failed to give the United Airlines story a standard newspaper article dateline, so the search crawler looked for the only date available and it found a fresh date that appears on every page of the site next to the Sun Sentinel masthead.

Because Google had picked up the old article, traffic flowed to the story, and it was eventually distributed by Income Securities Advisors to a Bloomberg stock market information site. When investors saw the article, they believed it was current news, and the sell-off began. The price fell from $12 to $3, and trading in United Airlines was halted. Eventually the truth came out, and the price rebounded.

Tribune Company says the old story showed up as a top link in the South Florida Sun Sentinel (also owned by Tribune Company) because the story was clicked on once during a late hour when there was little traffic to the site. That made it a ‘top story’, and so it was automatically put near the top of the page. The Google bot saw it, and assumed it was a new story.

Snippets from the "chicagotribune" site:
Tribune Co. said the story had received a "single visit" about 1 a.m. Eastern time Sunday but because traffic was so light to the site's business section at that hour, one click constituted "most viewed" status. Consequently, a new link was placed in the list of "most viewed" stories on the business page and the Google search crawler picked it up.

Google, in its own version of events published Wednesday on a company blog, said the problem began with the Sun Sentinel site. The site had given the United story no date stamp, the blog explained, so the search crawler looked for the only date available — the one that appears on every page of the site next to the Sun Sentinel masthead.
"The article failed to include a standard newspaper article dateline," the Google blog said. "but the Sun-Sentinel page had a fresh date above the article on the top of the page of 'September 7, 2008' [Eastern]."

The light-speed wipeout is a powerful reminder of how quickly bad information can spread via the Internet to a trigger-happy Wall Street that is willing to dump millions in stock before checking the facts. And it showed how the imperfect technologies of Internet search combined with human failure can cause ruinous results.

There have been so many instances when I have said "Google baba ki jai" cause I found something I was looking for at the click of a button.... However instances like this still tell me.....

Computers still can't run the world.......

People, use half a brain before accepting everything from google as GOD's word.

Nice Songs - Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue By Crystal Gayle

Artist: Crystal Gayle
Album: The Crystal Gayle Singles Album 1980
Song: Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue

I don't know when I've been so blue
Don't know what's come over you
You've found someone new
And don't it make my brown eyes blue

I'll be fine when you're gone
I'll just cry all night long
Say it isn't true
And don't it make my brown eyes blue

Tell me no secrets, tell me some lies
Give me no reasons, give me alibis
Tell me you love me and don't let me cry
Say anything but don't say goodbye

I didn't mean to treat you bad
Didn't know just what I had
But honey now I do
And don't it make my brown eyes
Don't it make my brown eyes
Don't it make my brown eyes blue

Tell me no secrets, tell me some lies
Give me no reasons, give me alibis
Tell me you love me and don't let me cry
Say anything but don't say goodbye

I didn't mean to treat you bad
Didn't know just what I had
But honey now I do
And don't it make my brown eyes
Don't it make my brown eyes
Don't it make my brown eyes blue

Nice Song - Save The Last Dance For Me By Michael Bublé

Artist : Michael Bublé
Lyrics : Save The Last Dance For Me

http://youtube.com/watch?v=VY60CkP1qAc

You can dance-every dance with the guy
Who gives you the eye,let him hold you tight
You can smile-every smile for the man
Who held your hand neath the pale moon light
But don't forget who's takin' you home
And in whose arms you're gonna be
So darlin' save the last dance for me

Oh I know that the music's fine
Like sparklin' wine,go and have your fun
Laugh and sing, but while we're apart
Don't give your heart to anyone
But don't forget who's takin' you home
And in whose arms you're gonna be
So darlin' save the last dance for me

Baby don't you know I love you so
Can't you feel it when we touch
I will never never let you go
I love you oh so much

You can dance,go and carry on
Till the night is gone
And it's time to go
If he asks if you're all alone
Can he walk you home, you must tell him no
'Cause don't forget who's taking you home
And in whose arms you're gonna be
Save the last dance for me

'Cause don't forget who's taking you home
And in whose arms you're gonna be
So darling, save the last dance for me
Save the last dance for me
Save the last dance for me.

Nice Song - The Weakness In Me By Joan Armatrading

Artist :Joan Armatrading
Lyrics : The Weakness In Me

I'm not the sort of person
Who falls
In and quickly out of love
But to you I gave my affection
Right from the start
I have a lover
Who loves me
How could I break such a heart
Yet still you get my attention
Why do you come here
When you know I've got trouble enough
Why do you call me
When you know I can't answer the phone
Make me lie
When I don't want to
And make someone else
Some kind of an unknowing fool
You make me stay
When I should not
Are you so strong
Or is all the weakness in me
Why do you come here
And pretend to be just passing by
When I mean to see you
And I mean to hold you
Tightly
Feeling guilty
Worried
Waking from tormented sleep
This old love has me bound
But the new love cuts deep
If I choose now
I'll lose out
One of you has to fall
And I need you
And you
Why do you come here
When you know I've got trouble enough
Why do you call me
When you know I can't answer the phone
Make me lie
When I don't want to
And make someone else
Some kind of an unknowing fool
You make me stay
When I should not
Are you so strong
Or is all the weakness in me
Why do you come here
And pretend to be just passing by
When I mean to see you
And I mean to hold you
Tightly

is this some sort of untold signal...........

Stand By Me By Ben E.King

O yet another rainy day....... Lovely Song......

Artist: King, Ben E.
Song: Stand by Me

When the night has come
And the land is dark
And the moon is the only light we'll see
No I won't be afraid, no I won't be afraid
Just as long as you stand, stand by me

And darlin', darlin', stand by me, oh now now stand by me
Stand by me, stand by me

If the sky that we look upon
Should tumble and fall
And the mountains should crumble to the sea
I won't cry, I won't cry, no I won't shed a tear
Just as long as you stand, stand by me

And darlin', darlin', stand by me, oh stand by me
Stand by me, stand by me, stand by me-e, yeah

Whenever you're in trouble won't you stand by me, oh now now stand by me
Oh stand by me, stand by me, stand by me

Darlin', darlin', stand by me-e, stand by me
Oh stand by me, stand by me, stand by me

Instant Coffee - Bru Ice Cappuccino

Nikhil n I had gone to Sector 18, Noida market [during lunch... don't get any weird ideas when u read this.....] to pick up some ingredients for a Banana Chocolate Milkshake [a recipe I saw on the program Nigella's Kitchen on Discover, travel and Living, which incidentally turned out to be a great hit].
At the check out counter, we saw a pack of 5 sachets, of the 4 new flavours of BRU Ice Cappuccino. Just the right placement for impulse purchases..... [ ;-) yupp... have read some books......]

It was available in four flavours – Irish crème, Mochaberg, Berry Blast, and Chocomint.

Now we wanted to try them all but were confused as to which one would be good, since the packs placed there were really large.

Was sure that "
Irish crème and Mochaberg" would be safer bets..... Also wanted to try out the new flavours of "Berry Blast and Chocomint"......

The guy at the counter said he had single sachet's too, jumped up and produced them in a jiffy..... [helpful people in large stores are good catalysts for people like us, who end up purchasing stuff which we don't really intend to purchase at the onset... ;-) ] We decided to take 1 sachet of each flavour.......

Came back to office n decided to make all of them in the evening.

Shared it with Snigdha, Lalit and Nikhil.

The packet said "The single serve sachets include coffee, milk and sugar in a pre mixed powder, sufficient to make one refreshing cup of delicious Ice Cappuccino. The creamy & frothy cappuccino can be prepared in seconds by adding 170 ml (a cup) of chilled water."

Now, how the hell were we to measure 170ml of water in office......... what an odd measurement to have...... They tried their best to be precise... but then......

Lalit's bright idea..... He said check out the size of the "nimboo pani" available at the snack counter in office [the label would say how much ml they are selling.... very bright, i must admit] , see how much of it fits in the glasses available in the canteen........ we could get an effective estimate of 170 ml of water.......

Snigdha conjured up a stirrer...... Nikhil provided some newspaper so that we don't mess up our work stations.... [ had to be neat n tidy else Mr Admin would have my neck if head heard, saw or found any traces of food stuff at our work stations..... ;-) ]

So we had all the flavours......
If I had to rank them, would say.....

1. Berry Blast - for the sheer innovation in the taste
2.
Mochaberg - just love mocha flavour....
3.
Irish crème - the classic
4.
Chocomint - was close to "After Eight" sort of taste...

This ranking doesn't mean chocomint wasn't good. They were all really good. Would recommend them all. This list is just a forced ranking [there goes the Product manager in me.... :-) ] of the available options....

We really freaked out on them......

The only disappointing thing was that we were expecting lots of froth like the ad.... but that was a bit of a let down....
Check out the ad at http://www.archive.org/details/NewBruIceCappuccino

I read, that Karan Johar had launched these flavours some time in the middle of May and did a promotion with Adlabs. Read the Indiainfoline article here and the agencyfaqs article here.

Go try them.... n let me know what you thought of them.....
