Sushi Dinner at Sakura, Hotel Metropolitan, CP

A friend and I went to Sakura at The Metropolitan, Hotel Nikko for a Sushi dinner.....

The restaurant is named after the Japanese Cherry Blossom, a beautiful, white and pink flower. The sakura's lifespan is three weeks. It blossoms between March and April. Japan declares a special national holiday, "Hanname", just so that people might see the sakura blossoming!
Its contemporary Japanese decor created a tranquil ambiance. Plain wooden chairs and a table. A half-curtain hung over the entrance, like a swing-door in the side room of an Irani restaurant, offering modest privacy.

We started with a round of drinks and after that we had Miso soup with Shitake Mushrooms and Pork was very nice..... chill in the Delhi air.... the soup was really needed....

We ordered Prawn Rolls with Flying Fish Roe. Tobiko (とびこ, in Japanese) is the Japanese word for the Flying Fish Roe used to create certain types of sushi.
The Flying Fish Roe does a “pop” in the mouth when they are chewed, and many people enjoy the texture of it. It doesn’t have a strong aroma, but has a slight dry aftertaste. For its rather clear taste, I loved the way it was popping in my mouth... :-)

The Sushi Ginger is something I would give a pass to every time I ate sushi... but this time I ate it.... was quite nice...In japanese it's called Gari (ガリ) a type of tsukemono (pickled vegetables). It is sweet, thinly sliced young ginger that has been marinated in a solution of sugar and vinegar. Gari is often served and eaten after sushi, and is commonly called 'Sushi Ginger'. Gari is usually eaten between dishes of sushi, as it is said to help cleanse the palate. Gari is not meant to be eaten or consumed in any type of sushi or hand roll.

California rolls were nice too... Ate it with Ponzu sauce. Ponzu (ポン酢) is a citrus-based sauce commonly used in Japanese cuisine. It is very tart in flavor, with a thin, watery consistency and a light yellow color. Ponzu shōyu or ponzu jōyu (ポン酢醤油) is ponzu sauce with soy sauce (shōyu) added, and the mixed product is widely referred to as simply ponzu.

Go chi so sma deshita! means- Thanks to the chef for a wonderful meal!

How can any meal be complete without dessert...... We had coffee and a Banana Chocolate Pie at the coffee shop.

Must say I had a good time, yes the food was good but the company even better....

Xmas with theatre friends ~ Dipali, Vikram and Amit

A party at Vikram's farm [We fondly call 'The Log Hut', we even celebrated Dipali's Anniversary here] is always fun and memorable..... This time the excuse was Xmas..... :-) without santa, instead we had the Gift of Friendship.....

We are such posers and Dipali pushes us into overdrive..... [noone's complaining, we all love it]
The cake from 'Sakley's'[Amit's bakery] was totally yummy.... Vikram, Dipali and I pigged out on it.... The pasta was nice too..... The biryani had us in a tizzy of Do-It-Yourself mode.....

Can you make out how chilly it was.... The fire burnt bright, kept us warm and with that burnt bright the flame of our friendship.... Cheers.....

Amit Guzzles ALL His Beer inorder To Get 'Chocolate Black Out Cake'

Met Amit, while doing a play with 'Living Room Theater' called 'Urban Tadka'. We hit it off instantly in a group of 4 Amit, Vikram, Dipali[had done the Caramel Cake for Dipali's Anniversary ] and me. We use to have a blast during practices.

We all went out a lot, did crazy stuff, Morning walks at Lodhi Garden, Humayun's Tomb, All American Diner, Sagar, Cafe Coffee Day, Stone, Movies, ran the Airtel Marathon........ We can chat for hours.

We use to have impromptu dance sessions at the play practice cause Dipali and Amit are both wonderful dancers. Going to Big Chill was a SUGAR HIGH for all of us.... :-) Tonino's had us asking for more..... Cheers at The Chinese was very cheery....

We went on a neemrana property spree and visited Patudi, Neemrana n Kesroli. The long drives use to be so much fun... not to forget the aweaome music in Amit's car.... Amazing collection ;-)

The play was held at gymkhana, we were quite nervous about it.... It went of well....

I was busy baking apple crumble n apple pie for neha didi's birthday....[that's another post coming up, Update: it's here] when Dipali called n said the doctor's[vikram] planned a surprise for Amit........... It was Amit's birthday. We[Dipali n I] would meet him at the venue whereIVikram was taking Amit and surprise him... by ringing in his b'day at midnite... interesting......
How much time do I have to make a cake.....after I get back from mall road....
2 hours to be precise... This included getting all the stuff prepared to bake, doing the cake, allowing it time to cool so that i could ice it AND get ready for the dinner....

Decided to do a cake I love[for it's moistness] n chocolate is a favourite with most men... :-) and I had a very very short span to make the cake in..... hence KISS..... Keep It Short n Simple..... Hence I made the Chocolate Blackout Cake...Hmmm.... am already drooling...

We went to one of our favourite places to celebrate after much venue changing... The Shack in Defence Colony... It was a fun filled evening with Amit finally drinking up all the alcohol he ordered.... no left overs this time....

Then came cake cutting time... The 'Foodus Bloggerus' awoke in Miss Chandra and I went crazy clicking pictures of the cake.... n even put an icing flower on Amit's nose... :-)

Hope you have a great time ahead and may we all cherish the wonderful memories....

Deeba's 2nd Blogiversary

I've never written a Blogiversary entry for myself or even celebrated the 50th or 100th post [even though I meant to....] Just didn't get around to doing it.....

I saw Deeba's article A WALK THROUGH THE STREETS OF OLD DELHI...& A 2ND BLOGIVERSARY GIVEAWAY!

She's celebrating 2 years of blogging.... and running a contest on the best comment.
Since I comment on most of her posts, this one warranted something special... started writing and then discovered that she deserved way more than a comment....

So here I am writing a post to wish her a HAPPY 2ND BLOGIVERSARY :-) Blog away girlie... Ure a joy to read....

So how did I meet her? I'm a part of the Delhi Blogger's society. When new member's join they sent a mail introducing themselves and their blog.

Deeba sent a mail sometime in August 08. Got interested in Deeba's URL http://passionateaboutbaking.blogspot.com now http://www.passionateaboutbaking.com. Clicked and entered a world of wonderful surprises and the most awesome stuff I could imagine.

The first post I read was "POPPY IN MY LIME COOKIES...COOKIES WITH ZEST!". They just blew me away. Her presentation was so immaculate.... I use to check her blog everyday.... :-)
Just check out a pic posted by her...

The next one was "MANGO MOUSSE CHEESECAKE TRIFLE...quite a yummy mouthful!" Mango is my favourite fruit :-) and when I saw it served so elegantly.... My heart skipped a beat....
Was totally addicted to the quips and quotes she puts in each post... :-)

She is a complete 'Foodus Bloggerus'. Click here to know what a 'Foodus Bloggerus' is.

Her yummy blog made me go back to the kitchen and try my hand at various things....I needed help one day, wrote to her and got an instant answer :-) We share phone numbers, from then on there was no looking back.....
Would call her whenever I needed help. she was always there for me at all sorts of odd hours.....

At first I tried some simple stuff You Can Kiss My Fingers. Slowly moved to more complicated stuff from her blog and started clicking pictures [no comparison to her awesome ones], did things like Mushroom Quiche with Daksayani and a Caramel Cake for Dipali's Anniversary which incidentally was a daring Baker's challenge.

We got talking sometime in October 08.

I was so excited.... to meet Deeba... Had been drooling all over her blog from so long and called her at odd hours for SOS advice about something or the other while baking....
She's fabulous.... gave me all the encouragement I ever needed.

Deeba and I - Passionately Variable

She graciously invited me over for lunch at her place Lunch at Deeba's, made a Zebra cake for them Zebra Cake for the Rajpals, We iced cupcakes together Cups of Magic ~ Vanilla Cupcakes @ Deeba's. It was such a nice day. Her kids are so wonderful.

10 + 3 Things You Should Know About Food Bloggers

I read this wonderful post on 'Not Quite Nigella' and was compelled to write.
She's a total foodie based out of Sydney.... That's Lorraine Elliott for you... Have been following her blog for a while now. She loves traveling far and wide for an unusual meal and cooking and eating food from different countries all around the world.

I'm gonna put out her article word to word sans the wonderful pictures [and put in my comments in italics along with pictures ]..... cause it so echos my experiences... also adding 3 more characteristic to it....

The species 'Foodus Bloggerus' is a peculiar creature. I know, because I feel distinctly peculiar most times. We march to the beat of our own drum (or more accurately the sound of food sizzling). When most people are enjoying their food, we’re taking close ups of it. So to understand this misunderstood creature, allow me to reveal 10 things you should know about this unusual creature, should you ever encounter us in the wild[or in a restaurant or at the dinner table loaded with lovely food].

1. Be prepared to eat early. Like a reverse Vampire, we love the light as more light means better photos. Eating dinner at 4pm? Sure, no problem, the light will be good then. Similarly, you’ll also find us seated near the window more often than not as the light is better there and we only use Flash in extreme circumstances or in closed blogger-friendly company.

2. We’re shy and hate to be stared at, especially while we are taking photos. However if it’s something exciting, we retreat into a haze and snap away uncaring. That’s called the “Paparazzi Brangelina moment”, when we descend into a frenzy of snapping.

3. Most people react to romantic lighting positively. Not the food blogger. We will utter things such as “crap, not this moody, romantic lighting again. What about my photos!”. Because as you know, it’s all about the photos ;)

4. We love to share food. The equation is straightforward: the more food shared, the more food sampled and the more we can write about.
Hmm, how do I get the piece back in without them noticing?
[A lot of people in office would vouch for being on my food tasting LIST... lol... The post 'You Can Kiss My Fingers' has a list of stuff my official taster's list sampled]

[n my favorite food model Daksayani..... my kid sister... the apple of my eye.....]

5. If invited somewhere, we’ll usually bring something as it gives us an excuse to make something for our blog. However this is not catch free. A cake might have a slice taken out of it for photographic reasons although it may be put back into place. Try not to stare and pretend the piece wasn’t cut. Please. We feel weird enough as it is.
[ Here's the tiramisu I took along to mami's house when we went to their place for dinner.
Sharad, you stole the opportunity from me by canceling the beer tasting session.....
]

6. We love to choose where to eat out. Please let us choose - food is our life and we will painstakingly research places. We may also send through copious links and print out menus. It’s a compulsion. Just take them smiling and back away if you need to. Oh and trust us, the place may look weird/seedy but the food will be good.
[Love the boys in office for letting me choose where we go for dinner... :-) ]

Food-the ultimate gift
7. If you ever want to give a gift, give food. Something unusual, hard to get or exotic is wonderful. Or something fresh from your garden. We are easy to please. I swear I thought I wanted Choos until I got a roast rib of pork as a gift.
[Well I haven't been gifted food but loved jenny when she sent me a lots of implements for cake decoration and even sent her precious book of baking with lots of chocolate recipes in it, Chetan got me silicon cupcake moulds, mamu bought me white platters]

8. Dinner out with us in a restaurant is an experience.[or any meal for that matter] It can either go well and can be an interesting experience or it can go badly. Embarrassing sometimes if you aren’t used to the excessive photo taking. But it’s never boring. Badly is when a chef comes out to yell at us for taking photos or something similar. Good is when you get an extra dessert or when the chef comes out to say hello or explain how they’ve made something.
[The chefs at Mad over Donuts shared with us how they work but not the secret of making donuts... Loved their aprons... They say "I'm MAD and I make Donuts"..... check out Rings of Delight ~ Donuts from 'Mad Over Donuts']

9. If you dine with us, you’ll learn the art of patience. Yes we even want to photograph the bread and butter. Food is better a bit colder right? Or so we’d like to convince you.
[This is something most people complain of when they go out with us..... They're getting familiar with this symptom now... Like they have a choice lol.. ;-) ]

10. It’s hard once you get into the habit, for us to not take photos of the food that we eat. I’ve only eaten out once and not taken a photo. And it hurt. Similarly, when I was watching an episode of Mad Men the other week, I was so engrossed in watching Peggy having dinner with her date and their drinks arrived and I wondered why she didn’t whip out a camera before drinking it and so my hand reached out to get my camera. Yes, it really did.

11. It's great fun to cook with a fellow blogger. Deeba has been my friend and guide. She inspired the food blogger in me.... Lunch at Deeba's was such a wonderful time. Made cake for her kids Zebra Cake for the Rajpals anddecorated Cups of Magic ~ Vanilla Cupcakes @ Deeba's at her place..... Awwww..... the blast we had :-) Deeba's account of the fun we had TRIFLE TALES...OF VISITING BLOGGERS & SWEET THINGS!

12. Birthday's and Anniversary's are made so special....by baking for them and then going crazy clicking :-)
Nikhil N Moms Surprise Birthday Party

Nani's Birthday

Dipali's Anniversary @ The Log Hut

13. Getting kids to cook with you. They are such a delight....

Tell me Dear Reader, do you have any other keen observations, either as a food blogger or an observer of one?

Sweet Memories

Nachiketa Chandra's friend Ekta says

Sweet Memories
On that day when we walked in the rain
I forget what we were looking for.
But I remember the sound of traffic.
Far away on the other side of the world.
I remember the melody.
That we hummed as we walked quietly.
I remember the fragrance of wet earth.
That you smelled like when you put your arm around me.
Did we find what we were looking for? I don't remember.
But I remember you. Staring at the raindrops on my eyelashes.
I remember the little beads of water stuck in your hair.
I remember the first sip of hot tea.
The taste of the rain soaked earthen pot.
That you tasted like when you kissed me.
That day, years ago, when we walked in the rain.

Ekta: You've summed up a very precious memory for me.... Thank you for helping me say it so beautifully..... just add some soup an awesome drive to this....

Nachiketa Chandra's friend says

It takes a minute to have a crush on someone, an hour to like someone and a day to love someone but it takes a lifetime to forget someone.

Dreamzzzzzzzzzz

Have you ever had dream that you can feel so much......
Feels so much like it actually happened but you're brain tells you, it's not possible only cause you wake up in your own bed....

I'm in office, lift door opens and there I find her.... what a surprise... I rush in to hug her.... hug her for long.....
See that there are others too with her... Hug them briefly.... Nice to see them smiling at me.... Hold her hand n stand there with a big goofy grin on my face.... Reach ground floor.... and come out... The lift opens out at a market near my house.... We hug again.... The girl accompanying her is not who I fear she is.....

They sit in a car and leave.... I'm left with a warm fuzzy feeling.....

Mala chachi walks back home with me..... when did she appear? I don't know.....

I wake up..... I know, I was dreaming something..... I was able to remember it all.. so clearly... I wonder did it actually happen.??????
I can still feel it in my bones... I can still feel the warm fuzzy feeling...... Can Hugs travel?????

Is it so simple to meet her? All I have to do is Drea-ea-ea-ea-eam, dream, dream, dream... reminded me of the song.....

Drea-ea-ea-ea-eam, dream, dream, dream
Drea-ea-ea-ea-eam, dream, dream, dream
When I want you in my arms
When I want you and all your charms
Whenever I want you, all I have to do is
Drea-ea-ea-ea-eam, dream, dream, dream

[Catch the song here...]

Will you still fight with me when I say don't wear heels?
Will you still save mattar ke samose for me?
Will the boys still be admonished for teasing me?
Will you still listen to all my jabbering?

Will I still get the first choice for everything... like EverythinG?
Will those peacock glasses still be there for me?
Will we still go shopping for my lucky suit again?
Will you still let me potter around in your kitchen?

Will you still tease me, till I turn pink?
Will u still let me drive your car?
Will you still save all my crazy crafty projects?
Will you still tick me off for talking so long on the phone?

Will you still slather my nose in coconut oil? [Sure works better than any other lotion, the mark is gone]
Will you still smile at me when I walk into the house n you have mehendi in your hair?
Will you still watch me from the ring-side and rush in only when I need help?
Will you still love me?

Has me totally hooked.....

It affects our seritonin, which reduces aches and pains
And does all kinds of cool things to the chemistry of our brains.
So totally hooked....

Cause we love chocolate, mouth watering chocolate
Black forest cheesecake, and chocolate torte
Some chocolate rum balls, sweet chocolate windfalls,
Bring on the chocolate, we need a boost.

Most of you would know by now how crazy I am about chocolate.... if not, then check out

The Chocolate Song lyrics by Buddy Wasisname

When your feet feel like they're made of stone and your bones are full of lead
Muscles feel like they're galvanized and there's concrete in your head
When your blood flows like molasses, you can't add two and two
The top looks like the bottom and orange looks like blue.

When you feel like you're hung over but you didn't drink last night
Your eyes look like a road map and your underwear feels tight
Gravity seems multiplied and your organs are on strike
You're in sudden death overtime and the wheels are off your bike

You need some chocolate, soft creamy chocolate
Some chocolate ice cream, and chocolate mousse
Some chocolate cheesecake, Bavarian chocolate
Bring on the chocolate, you need a boost.

They say it gives us pimples, it's addictive and it stains
It makes us fat and hyper, and clogs up all our veins
It puts migraines in our noggins and it's worse than cigarettes
But all those things are easier than having a chocolate fit.

Now there's lots of medical evidence to support our point of view
It's not all psychological, good news for me and you
It affects our seritonin, which reduces aches and pains
And does all kinds of cool things to the chemistry of our brains.

Good old chocolate, dark chewy chocolate
Nanaimo snack bars, chocolate eclairs
Hot chocolate sundae, sweet chocolate milkshake
Bring on the chocolate, we need a boost.

Now they say we're chocoholics and we have a legitimate beef
That we should lobby government to get funding for relief
Now if you can keep a secret, just leave it up to me.
I'll take the funds and build us a chocolate factory.

And if life should get too heavy and we decide to end it all
We won't do it with a pistol, drugs or alcohol
We'll just take a thousand dollars to a nice dessert café
Eat a dump truck load of chocolate and do ourselves away.

Cause we love chocolate, mouth watering chocolate
Black forest cheesecake, and chocolate torte
Some chocolate rum balls, sweet chocolate windfalls,
Bring on the chocolate, we need a boost.
Bring on the chocolate, chocolate, chocolate, yeah.....we need a boost!

Bribing God With Toy Planes

Just couldn't resist this... 'Bribing God With Toy Planes'.....
LOL....

Want to seek greener pastures abroad? Come to a gurudwara here and offer a plane and who knows your wish might get fulfilled.

This may sound strange but Punjabi youths, especially from the Doaba region, have been thronging the Gurudwara Sant Baba Nihal Singh Ji Shaheedan in Talhan to offer toy planes so that their wishes of going abroad and getting lucrative jobs are fulfilled.

Toy planes, inscribed with names of different carriers, are found in front of the Guru Granth Sahib.

Jolene Jolene Jolene Jolene

Heard this song on matchless music hour on 102.6 Air FM Rainbow..... It's sung by Dolly Parton... It's stuck in my head

Lyrics:
jolene jolene jolene jolene
I'm begging of you, please don't take my man
jolene jolene jolene jolene
please don't take him even though you can

your beauty is beyond compare
with flaming locks of auburn hair
with ivory skin and eyes of emerald green
your smile is like a breath of spring
your voice is soft like summer rain

I cannot compete with you jolene
and he talks about you in his sleep
and there is nothing I can do to keep
from crying when he calls your name, jolene jolene jolene jolene jolene
I'm begging of you please don't take my man
jolene jolene jolene jolene
please don't take him even though you can

well I can easily understand
how you can easily take my man
but you don't know what he means to me jolene
well you could have your choice of men
but I could never love again

he's the only one for me jolene
and I had to had to have this talk with you
my happiness depends on you
and whatever you decide to do jolene

jolene jolene jolene jolene
I'm begging of you please don't take my man
jolene jolene jolene jolene
please don't take him even though you can
